Constructed in 1727, Baclayon church is the oldest coral stone Roman Catholic church in the Visayas Region. One of the oldest in Asia and foremost among the best-preserved Jesuit-built Churches in the Philippines, it was formerly included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List of the Philippines in 1993 under the collective group of Jesuit Churches of the Philippines. When a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Bohol and other parts of Central Visayas in 2013, the church building sustained major damage. Reconstruction by the National Museum of the Philippines started in 2013 and was completed in 2017.
(Excerpts from Wikipedia - Baclayon Church May 1, 2021)
"This edifice was formally constructed by Father Juan de Torres & Father Gabriel Sanchez, both Jesuit priests. The first Christian mission in Bohol was on November 17, 1596. The first chapel made of wood was constructed in honor of The immaculate virgin of Concepcion and became an official parochial church in 1717. The existing coral stone church building was constructed in 1727. Governed by the Augustinian Recollects, in 1768, the silver tabernacle in the main altar was added. 1810, baptism and eucharist were initiated. In 1852, a few renovations and repairs were made but the original neo-classical architectural motif of using roman arches and temples was preserved up to the present time.
By the virtue of the order of the President of the Philippines number 260 dated August 1, 1973, amended by order number 375 dated January 14, 1974, and order number 1505 dated June 11, 1978, this church building was declared a national historic landmark on July 27, 1994."
