TRAVEL TO KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA DAY 2

November 6, 2017
MABUHAY!

This is a photo and video journal from our second day of travel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It features our visit to the Petronas Tower, KLCC.
DAY 2 TRAVEL ITINERARY ROUTE MAP

From our accommodation in Petaling Jaya, it is around 2 2-hour bus ride to Kuala Lumpur.

BREAKFAST AT JOHN SHUN HOTEL
We took our free light breakfast at the hotel, with the usual coffee and toasted bread with jam.

I like the way they prepare the eggs—soft boiled—a good match with soy sauce.

BREAKFAST WITH LOCAL FRIENDS

Another round of breakfast of Chinese noodles with local friends at One Utama shopping mall food court.

TAXI RIDE FROM PETALING JAYA TO KLCC

The taxi driver forgot to fill the radiator with water, causing the taxi to overheat and resulting in a 20-minute delay in our travel time.

VISIT TO A CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Upon entering this chocolate gallery, you will not only be greeted with a very sweet smile but also a brief lecture on how do they make a variety of mouth-watering Malaysian chocolates.

Petronas Twin Towers

Designers/design team

Main contractors / who built each tower

  • The project used two separate construction consortia (one per tower) so the six-year deadline could be met:

    • Tower 1 (west tower) — built by a Japanese consortium led by Hazama Corporation (with partners). (Wikipedia, old.skyscraper.org)

    • Tower 2 (east tower) — built by a South Korean consortium led by Samsung C&T / SKJ Joint Venture (with Kukdong, etc.). The skybridge contract was handled by Kukdong. (Wikipedia, old.skyscraper.org)

Construction timeline (major milestones)

  • Planning start: 1992. (Wikipedia)

  • Excavation/foundation work began: March 1993 (deep foundations, world-record concrete pours). (Wikipedia)

  • Superstructure (floor construction) start: April 1994. (Wikipedia)

  • Spires completed / major structural completion: 1996 (spires finished in early 1996; interiors and fit-out progressed through 1996–1997). (Wikipedia, Pelli Clarke & Partners)

  • First occupancy / move-in: late 1996–1997 (some tenants moved in 1997). (Wikipedia)

  • Official opening/inauguration: 31 August 1999 (official ceremony). (Wikipedia)

Project cost
There are different figures reported in public sources depending on scope and reporting year; the most commonly cited numbers are:

  • About RM 6 billion (≈ US$1.6 billion) — figure stated by the official Petronas Twin Towers / KLCC project pages and repeated by several summaries. This number is widely used to describe the towers’ total project cost. (Petronas Twin Towers, Designing Buildings)

  • US$1.6 billion is the common USD equivalent cited in multiple sources for the same RM 6 billion figure. (Designing Buildings, Petronas Twin Towers)

His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V is the 15th and current Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia and the Sultan of Kelantan.

ROAMING AROUND KL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL 2
As an architect, I like this airport's look and color combination, which gives me a fresh and vibrant outlook on life. I give the design of this airport TWO THUMPS UP!👍👍
