CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTIVITY BOOTCAMP 2018

January 8, 2018
MABUHAY!

This is a photo and video journal of my attendance to this training at Philconstruct 2018. As an advocate of continuous professional education in the construction industry, I personally find this training an eye opener on the magnitude of what else we can contribute to enhance the quality of CONCRETE.

THE VENUE
SMX Convention center is owned by SM Group located at the SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, Philippines. It is considered to be the largest venue for trade events, international exhibitions and corporate conventions and functions.

REGISTRATION
When the invitation was emailed to me by the event organizer, I immediately requested my company for sponsorship for me to attend this 2 day event. The topics to be discussed really captured my interest. Our company also sponsored 3 more executives to join me on the second day. The estimated crowd of attendees were around 200 persons.

THE LECTURERS
Mr. RICK YELTON, American  Concrete Institute (ACI) Member form USA

Mr. DEAN FRANK, Structural Engineer also from USA

DAY 1 LECTURE

The seminar is all about concrete which is the no. 1 choice of construction material for buildings and infrastructures in the Philippines. This is to showcase the latest trends and innovations in concrete construction and the forecast of its bright future.

Rick Yelton discussing the objectives of this bootcamp
Dean Franks introducing himself.

Innovations in mix design approaches explores the use of technology to enhance the workability of Ready Mix concrete. Some of these innovations are:
1. RAPID DRYING CONCRETE - is the first ready mixed concrete solution for moisture-related floor covering failures

2. NANO-TECHNOLOGY - nano-tubes bonds chemically with the cement paste, becoming the functional part of conrete, offering strength beyond simple mechanical benefits.

3. INTERNAL CURING - embedded tubes with water reservoir in the concrete paste that that internally cures the concrete while maturing.

4. MATURITY MEASUREMENT - Electronic "Intelligent" sensors are embedded before or after concrete pouring that communicate pertinent data to a reading device.

5. COMPUTER SIMULATION - concrete real-time data while pouring in the construction jobsite can now be accessed by ready mix producer through smart phones.

OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED THAT HAS AN IMPACT FOR CONCRETE QUALITY CONTROL:
  • Concrete design mix overview
  • Sustainable Aspect of Precast & Precast Concrete
  • When you should reject a truck?
  • The Role of ACI & ASTM in the Quality Control testing of Concrete
  • Quality & Safety of Precast QA during design, fabrication & erection

Note: The above topics were taken from the lecturer's presentation.

AT THE MANILA BAY

CONCRETE will still remain to be the popular choice of construction material in the future due to its versatility, economy and strength. Construction projects are getting bigger and more complex. Hence, the construction industry really needs to pursue innovation, do a lot of research and propagate continuous education to construction professionals that is aim to enhance the quality of concrete in terms of workabilty and strength while maintaining cost effectiveness to cater an ever changing mode in the design and construction market.
I personally wanted to thank Mr. Rick Yelton and Mr. Dean Franks for sharing with us their useful insights and knowledge gain from extensive experience in the concrete industry.
