DIY Budget Travel in Israel: Day 2 Part 1 Exploring Old Jerusalem

July 5, 2019
Mabuhay!
This is a photo and video journal of part 1 day 2 of our DIY budget travel adventure in Israel. Today we are exploring old Jerusalem and visiting some of the familiar places we read in the Bible.
Breakfast In our Hostel
We stayed in the Overstay Hostel in Tel Aviv during this trip.

There is a bit of confusion because first, we booked on their affiliate hostel. Then when we arrived in Tel Aviv we received an email that this accommodation was closed for renovation so they referred us to their affiliate Overstay Hostel. However, the hostel management notified us that first, our booking was not confirmed yet then they have an age restriction, they don't allow above 45 years because it is a party hostel and they don't want to receive any complaints from anyone due to evening party noise mostly on the rooftop. I told the management that we are on a budget journey & if there is any vacant room for two on the lower floors, most likely the noise will not be a problem for us. The management gave us an affirmative response & the hustle of finding a hostel on that day that fit into our tight budget was resolved.😀😀😀

We still have some biscuits, coffee & noodles we bought from the Philippines. But by the way, Overstay Hostel serves free breakfast on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This is a youth hostel that hosts a party every night.

Taxi Ride from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
The Tel Aviv bus station is a landmark meeting place for Filipinos in the capital city. I was really surprised that there are lots of Filipinos working as caregivers in Israel.

A common cheap transportation in Israel is the sherut or shared taxi.

Our travel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is good.

Old Jerusalem

The Damascus gate is one of the main entrances to the old walled city of Jerusalem.

The locals are very friendly. They even offered for them to pose with my wife for a souvenir photo.

Upper Room
This is the place recognized by tradition where the Last Supper of our Lord Jesus Christ took place with his disciples. The Last Supper was immortalized also through art by Leonardo Da Vinci in his famous painting with the same title.

Showing the pita bread we bought in a local bakery here in Jerusalem.

Christian Information Center
Christian Information Center provides a wide range of information for those wishing to learn as much as possible about Christianity in the Holy Land and about the Holy Land in relation to Christianity. It is located inside Jaffa Gate opposite The Tower of David.

Jerusalem Skyline
On the rooftop of a church building, we were given the privilege to have a souvenir photo with the Jerusalem skyline in the background. Sorry for my rigid facial expression. The sunlight was so intense that I forgot to smile 😅😅😅.

Dormition Abbey Hagia Maria
Abbey of the Dormition is a Catholic abbey marking the spot where Mary, the mother of Jesus, died.

St. Jacques Convent

Christ Church Ministry
The first Protestant church (Anglican) in the Holy Land was built in 1849. This compound was also the home of the British consulate, the first modern hospital, schools, and a house of industry.

Christ Church Guest House Coffee Shop

We enjoyed the delicious meal served in the church's guest house cofeeshop

Joining us for our lunch is Ms. Gloria Oheyo from Caloocan City, Philippines. We met her in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where she offered herself to take us some pictures. Then she invited us to follow her and introduced us to various churches that she served in Jerusalem. She has been staying for 20 years now in Israel. She has a daughter to an Israeli making her a permanent resident of Israel.

The magical sound of the harp played right beside the Jaffa gate. This brings us to the time when King David played the harp to calm the distressed King Saul.

It is really amazing how Israel - mostly a desert land with a scarce rainy season became a leader in agriculture.
