DIY Budget Travel In Israel: Day 5 Part 1 Old Joppa

July 8, 2019
Mabuhay!
This is a photo and video journal of Day 5 Part 1 of our DIY budget travel to Israel featuring our visit to old Jaffa.
Getting There
We enjoyed this 30-minute walk from our accommodation to Jaffa Port facing the Mediterranean Sea.

Old Jaffa
I love seeing these street arts.

There are also bikes for rent.

This is a flea market in Jaffa where locals sell second-hand goods.

Mahmoudiya Mosque

The Clock Tower was donated by the inhabitants of Jaffa and the villages of Judea to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign (31.8.1876-27.4.1909) of Sultan Abdulhamid II. The cornerstone was laid on September 1, 1900, and construction was completed in 1902 ог 1903.

Isaiah Ajiman of Istanbul, who was close to the Turkish rulers purchased a building in Jaffa in 1820 where he established a guest house and synagogue for Jewish pilgrims. The hose served the small Jewish community of Jaffa for 101 years until the riots of 1921 when it was destroyed. Its location was recently discovered.

The Andromeda Rock is a rock jutting out of the Mediterranean in front of the old town of Jaffa, in present-day Israel, where it serves as a local tourist attraction. According to Greek mythology, this was the site where King Cepheus's daughter Andromeda was chained and sacrificed to a sea monster but was timely rescued by Perseus, who then married Andromeda.

Saint Nicolas is a very ancient convent with a church built by the Armenian monks. The convent also served as a guesthouse for the Armenian pilgrims coming by sea to visit the Holy Land and the Christian shrines. In March 1799, Napoleon's army occupied the city of Jaffa. The Armenian convent served Napoleon's plague-stricken soldiers as a hospital and Napoleon visited his soldiers at this site. The church today serves as a parish church for the Armenian community.

Meeting a Smart Dog in the Mediterranean Sea

My wife enjoyed playing catch with this smart and playful dog named Luna - a Jack Russel Terrier breed. BTW, today is my wife's birthday.
