Maria Cristina Falls is Closed to the Public
When we arrived, our excitement turned to disappointment because the guard told us that the falls is closed to the public. The road to Maria Cristina Falls is closed because it is not passable due to a landslide caused by continuous rain.
Maria Cristina Falls is named after two legendary sisters, Maria and Cristina, who are said to have lived near the falls and tragically sacrificed themselves for the love of a man. The story tells of a handsome young man loved by both sisters. To resolve the conflict, each sister, in turn, sacrificed herself by jumping into the falls. The young man, heartbroken, named the falls Maria Cristina in their memory.

Not only adored for her majestic beauty, Maria Cristina Falls is also cherished in Mindanao due to its alternative power. This beauty generates electricity through a hydroelectric power plant called Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant, part of the Agus Hydroelectric Complex. The plant harnesses the power of the falling water from the falls, converting its kinetic energy into electrical energy. Specifically, the water is channeled through penstocks (large pipes) to turbines, which spin due to the water's force, and these turbines are connected to generators that produce electricity. The generated electricity is fed into the power grid to supply the region.
